Colorado Advanced Search and Seizure is the state-specific deep dive into Fourth Amendment doctrine for Colorado law enforcement officers. The course is built on the Fourth Amendment plus Article II Section 7 of the Colorado Constitution, which sometimes layers additional protection on top of the federal floor.
The course is organized around the four-question framework that drives every Fourth Amendment decision: who did the search or seizure, was it a protected area, did a search or seizure occur, and do you have CREW. Across fifteen lessons, you will work through the legal fundamentals, private actors and the Cat Out Of The Bag doctrine, protected areas including the Curtilage Color Codes, knock and talks under Florida v. Jardines, calls for service under Santana, Payton, and Lange, open fields, community caretaking versus Emergency Aid (Caniglia v. Strom), protective sweeps under Maryland v. Buie, both Katz privacy searches and Jones trespass searches (including the Wobbling Tire application), seizures of persons under Hodari D, seizures of property, the universe of recognized exceptions, consent to search with all three requirements, and crime scene processing under Mincey v. Arizona.
The course is taught in plain working officer language, anchored to real case law, and built on the signature Blue to Gold framings that turn complex doctrines into things you can recall on the street. After completing the course, you will be able to walk up to any Colorado home, identify the green, yellow, and red zones, articulate every search or seizure decision against the right doctrine, and walk into court ready to defend your conduct.
You must log in and have started this course to submit a review.
