Arizona Advanced Search and Seizure is the state-specific deep dive into Fourth Amendment doctrine for Arizona law enforcement officers. Taught by John Wien, attorney, senior legal instructor, and 10-year Arizona law enforcement veteran with SWAT, FTO, and force science analyst certifications, the course is built for working officers who already have field exposure and want to master both federal and state constitutional doctrine.
The course is organized around the four-question framework that drives every Fourth Amendment decision: who did the search or seizure, was it a protected area, did a search or seizure occur, and do you have CREW (Consent, a Recognized Exception, or a Warrant). Across fourteen lessons, you will learn the legal fundamentals, private actors and the Cat Out Of The Bag doctrine, curtilage with the Color Codes, knock and talks under Florida v. Jardines, calls for service and hot pursuit under Santana, Payton, and Lange, community caretaking versus Emergency Aid (Caniglia v. Strom), protective sweeps under Maryland v. Buie, abandoned property, both Katz privacy searches and Jones trespass searches, seizures under Hodari D and Habeas Gravis, consent to search across all three requirements, investigative detentions and the Melting Ice Cube, and plain view and crime scenes under Hicks and Mincey.
The course is taught with real video footage, full case walkthroughs, and the signature Blue to Gold framings that turn complex doctrine into something you can apply on the street. Article II Section 8 of the Arizona Constitution is woven throughout to highlight where state law adds protection beyond the federal floor. After completing the course, you will be able to answer all four questions in real time, articulate every search and seizure decision against the right doctrine, and walk into court ready to defend your conduct.
