Advanced Search and Seizure is Blue to Gold’s flagship class and the most popular course we offer. Built for working officers who want to stop guessing on the street and start making good case law every shift, this course teaches you how to independently analyze any Fourth Amendment issue you face on patrol, in an investigation, or in court. It is designed for officers who already have field exposure and who want a senior legal instructor’s playbook for staying lawful while staying aggressive.

The course is built around a four question framework and an acronym you will use on every call: CREW, meaning Consent, a Recognized Exception, or a Warrant. Across seventeen lessons, you will work through who did the search or seizure, whether the area was protected (curtilage, abandoned property, open fields, standing), whether a search or seizure actually occurred (Katz privacy, Jones trespass, Hodari D show of authority, Habeas Gravis physical seizure), and whether you had CREW. You will learn the doctrines that anchor each question, including private search and the Cat Out Of The Bag rule from Jacobson, knock and talks under Jardines and the Girl Scout rule, the Peeping Tom rule on curtilage, Caniglia and the Emergency Aid Exception, consensual encounters, consent to search, Georgia v. Randolph for co-occupant refusals, investigative detentions and the Melting Ice Cube, protective sweeps under Maryland v. Buie, plain view and plain view seizure, and crime scene processing under Mincey v. Arizona.
