Mastering Search and Seizure is a comprehensive course that combines Miranda doctrine with the core Fourth Amendment doctrines working officers face every shift. Taught by Anthony Bandiero, attorney and senior legal instructor, the course is built for officers who want a single class that ties together interrogation rules with the search and seizure doctrines that wrap around every arrest.
The course is organized around three Miranda lessons and six Fourth Amendment lessons. Miranda is taught in three parts covering triggers (arrest-like custody, imminent interrogation, known officer), waivers (knowing and voluntary, express versus implied), and invocations with the harsh cross-investigation consequence. The Fourth Amendment side covers what counts as a search under Katz and Jones, curtilage with the Color Codes, consent to search with all three requirements and Georgia v. Randolph, traffic stops under Whren and Rodriguez with K9 sniffs under Caballes, vehicle searches under Carroll and Collins with the AAA rule, and home entry to arrest under Payton, Santana, and Lange.
After completing the course, you will be able to handle the interrogation phase without losing the case to a defective waiver, recognize a search under either privacy or trespass doctrine, identify curtilage on any property, obtain and stay within the scope of a consent search, make a traffic stop that holds up under Rodriguez, and apply the right warrantless vehicle search for the facts in front of you. You will leave with the framework that ties Miranda and Fourth Amendment doctrine into a single working playbook.
